There is nothing as cosy as a crackling fire to warm you and your housemates on winter days. You cannot have a fire without firewood. How do you know whether you are getting good firewood? In this blog, we will tell you all you need to know.
The demand for firewood has never been higher than it has been in recent years. It is therefore of the utmost importance that you opt for a reliable partner that stands for qualitative firewood. This partner offers firewood in various forms: entire pallets or smaller bags with tropical hardwood. Always check whether the wood is dry enough. That way you can use it immediately in the stove or fireplace, and get the best return.
It is not easy to compare the prices of firewood. People often compare the wrong volumes, which leads you to the wrong conclusions. By choosing a supplier that complies with all rules, you can be sure you are making a good purchase.
Not every size of firewood is fit for use in the fireplace or in the stove. Pieces of wood of 33 to 40 cm length are perfect. Can you use any kind of wood as firewood? No, beech is preferable. If the wood is sufficiently dry to the core and stacked on pallets, this will not only make transport easy, it also means that you have found your perfect firewood supplier!
The unit of measure for firewood is the stere. A stere is the volume of wood you will get when you stack unsplit wood of one metre in length over a width of 1 metre and up to a height of one metre (= one cubic metre). This has some consequences. A stere of wood consisting of wood blocks that are shorter than one metre or that are split, looks smaller. How do you know whether you are actually getting a stere of wood? Use a conversion coefficient. Please note that this coefficient is different depending on the species of wood and the type of wood product.
You also need to make sure that you know what the calorific value of your firewood is. This is the amount of heat released in the case of complete combustion of firewood. The voluminous mass of wood differs from one wood species to another. As a result, the calorific value of a stere of wood can also be very different. More than enough reasons to dwell a little longer on the choice of a professional firewood supplier.
